Conspicuous Comsumption by Shag

Shag has a brand new show with all new paintings at Billy Shire Fine Art

Artist Statement:

Conspicuous Consumption is a collection of paintings intended to clarify one of the central themes running through my work: the acquisition of beautiful, frivolous, aesthetically pleasing and status -advancing objects is not an affliction on society. Art, jewelry, fine clothing and lavish dwellings have been a part of human existence since our cave -dwelling ancestors first realized that natural materials could be rearranged into new and beautiful things. These appealing objects have added to wealth and culture of civilizations for thousands of years.

In addition, the consumption of food and drink, and the practice of pleasurable activities, contribute to the meaning, importance, and singularity of human existence. Although irony plays a large part in my art, I hope that it won’t detract from my sincere belief that an ascetic life is missing a substantial part of what makes one’s time on this planet worthwhile.

Exhibition: September 15 – October 20, 2007
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 15th, 7-10 pm
