Check out these beautiful little films by Keith Loutit
Spot the technique …
He’s shooting real live action, on HD to get that crisp sharp look.
He’s using time-lapse, perhaps one frame a second, which gives the jerky stop-motion effect.
On top of that he’s using the tilt-shift effect, he’s faking a narrow DOF by blurring the foreground and background, which makes it look like he’s shooting miniatures.
And he’s pumped up the saturation to emphasize unreality.
It’s done perfectly, I love it.

Congratulations to all nominees, it’s a great year for animated shorts. I could and perhaps should, write a separate post on each of them.

LA MAISON EN PETITS CUBES : dir Kunio Kato : In a world gradually flooding with water, an old man adapts to changing circumstances and looks back on his life.
LAVATORY - LOVESTORY : dir Konstantin Bronzit : A lonely lavatory attendant finds a bouquet of flowers in her tip jar.
OKTAPODI : dir Emud Mokhberi and Thierry Marchand : An octopus fights to keep his beloved out of the cooking pot.
PRESTO : dir Doug Sweetland : A carrot triggers a war of wits between a magician and his hungry bunny.
THIS WAY UP : dir Alan Smith and Adam Foulkes : A series of misfortunes befalls a pair of undertakers on their way to the cemetery.
Every year Animation World News takes the shorts nominees on a tour of the major studios, showing their films and meeting other animators. It’s all chronicled here.

More animated typographical deliciousness
Crisis Of Credit by Jonathan Jarvis
The Crisis of Credit Visualized is a series of animated shorts that explains the economic crisis by giving it form. It is also an argument for how designers have the unique ability to see a complex situation, then turn around and communicate it to others. By giving graphic form to the credit crisis, it becomes comprehensible. Not only do economic activities take shape, but new relationships can emerge between these shapes.

Rankin/Bass have been making schmaltzy stop-motion Christmas Specials since the beginning of time.
Simple designs, classic stop-motion tricks, minimal but effective animation, creaky camera moves and some great title graphics.
Others worth watching:
Mad Monster Party
The New Adventures of Pinnochio
Willy McBean & His Magic Machine
Yay for stop-mo! Happy Holidays!!

Mix of very simple 30s style drawn animation with realistic-ish CG, comped with and scratchy vignetted old film look.

Watch it here. Animated by Vetor Zero
Reminds me a little of the controversial bunny ad. But only a little bit, I don’t want to start that whole conversation again.

There’s been some really nice animated typography coming out.
One of the first and best was this piece by Jarratt Moody, riffing on some dialogue from Pulp Fiction
